The Mozambican government announced on Monday that it will distribute 15 million books to students attending Grades 1 to 7 starting in December, in advance of the next academic school year, which starts in February.
“The first books have already started to arrive and I believe that by December we will start distributing,” today’s edition of newspaper ‘O País’ quotes Mozambique’s Minister of Education and Human Development Conceita Sortane as saying.
December was chosen so as to allow the books to be packaged and prepared as they arrive, taking advantage of concentration of logistical resources, the minister explained.
The measure will benefit six million students, she added.
The production of free textbooks for the Mozambican education system costs US$17 million (€15.3 million ) per year, a sum which is provided by cooperation partners.
Compulsory education in Mozambique goes up to Grade 9, but text books are provided for only the first seven years. Grade 8 and 9 students are exempt from school registration fees, but must pay for their own books.
