The National Institute of Economic Activities of Mozambique (INAE) is to create its own anti-counterfeiting force, the director of the institution, Rita Freitas has announced
“Police are always needed when we enter an establishment where we suspect, or have had a tip-off suggesting, that counterfeiting is going on,” said Rita Freitas, quoted by O País in Maputo today.
The force will include personnel from the Interior Ministry, Institute for Standardisation and Quality (INOQ), Institute of Industrial Property, Tax Authority and the Ministry of Health.
The director of INAE pointed out that the country has a high rate of counterfeit and out-of-date products, representing a risk to the health of consumers, especially children.
“We must fight to reduce the rates of counterfeiting and smuggling, which are worrying because illegal products are entering the country,” Freitas added.
Counterfeiting in the country is also encouraged by consumers’ inability to identify products unfit for consumption.
“The consumer when he goes to the store often has no way of knowing whether the product is suitable for consumption or not,” Freitas concluded.
