The Mozambican government said that it will sell a total of 3,500 kilograms of mineral products seized in districts of central Zambezia province on Thursday at public auction.
“These are products seized in the last two years in the course of inspections in the province of Zambézia,” Obete Matine, the inspector general of Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (Mireme) told Lusa.
The industrial beryl, tantalite, smoky quartz and amethyst and aquamarine have been on exhibition at the Provincial Infrastructure Services in Quelimane, the provincial capital, since Monday.
“A lot of people have visited, and there have already been some offers,” Matine said.
The Mozambican government announced in June that it would start rewarding whistle-blowers casting light on the smuggling of mineral and fuel resources, in an attempt to stop the illegal trade of this type of products in the country.
The reward for information will corresponds to 10% of the value of products sold by public auction, or 10% of any fines imposed.
The inspector said that all the products offered for sale in the current auction had resulted from the ministry’s own efforts, and therefore there would be no compensation paid.
