The Ministry of Transport and Communications has decided to suspend passenger transport activities by the company Transportes Ideal, better known as ‘CityLink’, with effect from this Monday, December 19, pending the result of an investigation into safety conditions at the company.
According to an official note to which Notícias Online has enjoyed access, on December 15, 2022, on National Highway Number 6 (EN6), in the Coca-Cola area of the city of Chimoio, Manica province, a multi-sectoral road traffic inspection team comprising the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, INATRO, I.P., and other local entities, intercepted a Yutong brand bus, registration AKY 641 MC, owned and operated by Transportes Ideal.
“From the work carried out on the ground by the inspection team, it was found that the bus in question was transporting passengers in deplorable mechanical conditions, namely, the failure of the vehicle’s acceleration system, even to the point where the driver had improvised a rope so that another person, situated some distance from the driver, could accelerate the vehicle instead of himself, endangering the safety of passengers and other users of the public road,” the statement recounts.
According to the note, such a procedure is contrary to passenger transport rules, “and shocked Mozambican society, as it is a practice that puts the lives of the occupants of the vehicle in question, [puts] passers-by and other users of the public road at risk, counter to and defying the efforts of the government and society in general to reduce the rate of road accidents involving passenger transport vehicles, especially over this festive season”.
