The Mozambican government is considering a ban on the use of plastic bags in the country, a proposal for which is already in the consultation phase.
The information was shared by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Land and Environment, Emília Fumo, at a press conference in Maputo on the occasion of the I International Plastic Bag Free Day, marked last week under the motto “Preserve the Environment – Say No to Plastic Pollution”.
“We are preparing a proposal to ban plastic bags in the country. In fact, the proposal is already made and we are currently in the consultation phase,” Fumo said, noting that runaway use of plastics was contributing to a reduction in soil and overall landscape quality.
The government, she said, was working with the main producers of plastic bags, and with importers and civil society, and the proposal could be presented to the Council of Ministers within two months.
It is estimated that 10 percent of the total amount of plastics produced worldwide ends up in the ocean, where it will take about 500 years to decompose.
International Plastic Bag Free Day was marked in Maputo with an exhibition of household articles promoting environmentally friendly consumption habits.
