Mozambique to launch $7.2 billion Coral Norte LNG project in October
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi declared on Friday that the government is in a hurry to take schools, hospitals, electricity, roads and clean water to places where these facilities still do not exist.
Nyusi expressed this feeling of urgency at the ceremony where he inaugurated the electrification of the Macaloge administrative post, in Sanga district, in the northern province of Niassa.
This project is part of the government’s “Energy for All” programme which hopes to bring electrical power to all homes in the country by 2030.
The Macaloge distribution network consists of 54 kilometres of medium voltage transmission line, 17 kilometres of the low voltage grid, six transformer posts, and 104 lampposts for public lighting. It can provide electricity for 800 homes.
Building infrastructures is a central goal of the government, said Nyusi. With the electricity now available at Macaloge “we can install flour mills to transform our maize and sorghum”, he added. “We can pack our potatoes or beans into proper sacks, and then transport them to markets that pay more”.
With processing, he said, the local crops will fetch a higher price. He wanted to see a flourishing of small and medium enterprises in Macaloge, which would later become large scale industries, employing young people, generating income, and improving the well-being of local people.
The local health centre now has electric lighting, so that the residents of Macaloge have access to health care even at night. The two primary schools and the secondary school are also connected to the electricity grid, which means that adult education classes can now take place at night.
The electrification of Macaloge, budgeted at 870,000 US dollars, has been financed by the Mozambican government and partners such as the Arab Bank for the Economic Development of Africa (BADEA), the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the OPEC Fund.
