The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Higino de Marrule, is today inaugurating a batch of artisanal cotton-processing machines in Namialo, Nampula province, northern Mozambique.
The initiative is a result of the memorandum of understanding signed between the governments of Mozambique and Ethiopia for technology transfer in the textile, clothing and tanning sectors.
According to ‘Notícias’, the implementation of this initiative will stimulate new business in the cotton value chain, improving the income of family producers and rendering the value chain more robust.
Mozambique is one of the world’s major cotton producers, but lack of capacity means much of this cotton production is exported in the form of cotton fibre.
The government’s idea is to encourage artisanal and industrial processing of cotton as a means of adding value, generating revenue and employment in the country.
Currently, only Maputo province has a cotton fibre processing plant.
The small artisanal processing units being inaugurated in Namialo today have been operating for some months under a pilot scheme.
