Mozambique: Government hopes to raise US$210 million to build 30 district hospitals

Mozambique’s government announced on Tuesday that it would try to raise around US$210 million (€192.7 million) from international partners for the construction of around 30 district hospitals.

Speaking at a press conference, the deputy health minister, Ilesh Jani, said the government would request the funds during an international conference on investment in health, which will be held in Maputo, between 13 and 14 of this month.

“The projected investments are intended to improve the health indicators of our population,” Jani stressed.

The increase in the budget allocation in the sector, he said, was aimed not only at building more infrastructures but also at equipping health units and boosting human resources.

On the occasion, Mozambique’s deputy minister of economy and finance, Amilcar Tivane, defended the need to strengthen investments in the health area, stressing that the government annually allocates 13% of the budget to this area.

The international conference will be attended by about 200 guests, including the Secretary General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), EthiopianTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
