The Mozambican government expects an 11% increase in cereal production in the current agricultural season compared to the previous one, the prime minister, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, said on Wednesday in parliament.
“In the field of agriculture, the preliminary assessment of the current 2020/2021 agricultural season indicates good prospects in the sense that we will increase production, reaching 3.1 million tonnes of cereals against 2.8 million recorded in 2019/2020,” he said.
The forecast of increased production results from the commitment of producers, the increase of investments in the agriculture sector, with emphasis on the Sustenta programme, as well as the good rainy season that we are registering, he added.
The abundant rainfall has filled chronically low dams, especially in the south of the country, a region that for years had been facing a drought scenario due to low rainfall, even in the rainy season.
A report released in late February by the Famine Early Warning Network (Fews), used for decision-making by humanitarian agencies, stressed that if families have access to seeds, many flooded areas could recover by the second season’s harvest in June and July.
