Mozambique: Government dispatches delegation to Malawi to assess refugees

The provincial government in Mozambique’s Tete province announced that it will dispatch a delegation to Malawi in the coming days to assess the needs of the alleged 3,000 Mozambican refugees in the country.
The refugees have abandoned their homes to escape clashes between Frelimo-led government and main opposition Renamo, local media reported on Tuesday.
“This delegation will be working with the Malawian government and our colleagues from the Mozambican consulate in Malawi to allow an accurate assessment of the accommodation centres and also to conduct an inquiry so that the real needs of people are known for later support,” said Lina Portugal, quoted by the country’s state-owned news agency AIM.
The provincial government in Tete said that the other reason in conducting this inquiry is to evaluate the reasons that motivated the refugees to abandon their places of origin and if there are conditions for them to return home.
Since 2014, Tete province has been registering incidents between armed men from the main opposition and the defense and security forces of Mozambique.
