The Mozambican government has declared three days of national mourning starting at midnight [local time] on Thursday (26) in honour of Pope Francis, who died in the Vatican City on Monday.
The decision was made during the 13th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, which took place on Tuesday in the Mozambican capital, Maputo.
Speaking at the usual press briefing, minutes after the end of Cabinet’s 13th session, Minister Salimo Valá explained that the government’s decision comes in recognition of the Pope’s humble stance, his commitment to the marginalized and his tireless search for peace.
During the period of national mourning, the national flag and the presidential flag must be flown at half-mast throughout the national territory and at Mozambican diplomatic and consular missions.
