The Mozambican government approved on Tuesday a decree to create the National Blood Institute, the cabinet spokesman, Filimão Suazi, announced.
The institute, created from the National Blood Service, aims to ensure the management, coordination and supervision of activities related to transfusion and blood collection, Filimão Suazi told the media moments after a cabinet session in Maputo.
“What we are doing is updating this service and improving the mechanisms of organisation, management of duties and competencies, admitting that there are new diseases and new ways of doing blood treatment”, he said.
The Mozambican executive intends to restore the functioning of this process, ensuring that there is a more autonomous entity especially dedicated to this service.
The main Mozambican hospitals have often warned about the lack of blood donors in the country, adopting various strategies and campaigns to mobilise more volunteers.
In June, Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), Mozambique’s largest, announced that it was cancelling surgeries due to a drop in the number of blood donors caused by fear of infection by the new coronavirus.
