The Mozambican government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) intend to negotiate a new financial agreement.
A very brief IMF statement, dated Thursday, said that an IMF team, led by Pablo Lopez Murphy, visited Maputo from 19 February to 4 March “to discuss policy implementation under the ECF arrangement”.
According to the IMF website, the ECF is the Extended Credit Facility which is intended to provide medium term financial assistance to low income countries with protracted balance of payments problems.
Following Lopez Murphy’s departure “discussions related to the programme reviews continued virtually in the subsequent weeks”, said the IMF statement.
Apparently these were unsuccessful, since the statement adds that “the Mozambican authorities and IMF staff have reached an understanding not to proceed with the remaining Reviews under the ECF-supported arrangement”.
Instead, “to better align IMF support with the new government’s priorities and vision, the Mozambican authorities have requested the initiation of discussions for a new IMF programme. Discussions with IMF staff will begin in the period ahead”.
No further details were given.
