Four new safari guides—Paulo Chassara, Naida Conjane, Eminência Mbalate and Clemente Banda—joined the Gorongosa Park tourism team in December, bringing the total number of trained staff available to escort visitors to 16.
The new guides are Mozambicans who completed their Level 1 training and now have the skills and abilities to lead safari excursions and share what they know about the Park geography and geology, wildlife, flora, fauna and local culture.
A fifth guide, José Montinho, completed his Level 2 training and is now a professional field guide who will help others continue their studies and advance to professional status.
Chassara, Conjane, Mbalate, Banda and Montinho were trained and certified by Sakkie Van Aswegen of Bushveld Training Adventures, a company that helps trainees qualify for accreditation with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa.
All 16 of Gorongosa Park’s guides were also certified or re-certified in first aid so they can assist with emergencies.
