The Gorongosa National Park (PNG), Mozambique’s largest, is to reopen in May for tourists, after being closed due to the impact of Cyclone Idai, as announced by the park’s administration on Thursday.
“At this time, we are not receiving tourists, because there are no conditions, but in May we will start again”, Rui Branco, the PNG conservation director, told Lusa, on the sidelines of the launch of a report on criminal justice in wildlife in Maputo.
Rui Branco said that the cyclone and the floods that followed blocked the roads to the park, and repair works are still underway.
The fauna saw “small losses” as a result of the cyclone, but the damage in the park is still being calculated.
The park is in the province of Sofala, the worst-affected by the cyclone, and has about 4,000 square kilometres.
Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe on 14 March.
In Mozambique, it claimed 602 lives and left 1,641 injured, with more than 1.5 million people affected, according to the latest official tally.
