Prospecting work is underway in Lalau district, Nampula province, in areas thought to be rich in mineral resources, with the emphasis on gold and ironstone.
Lalaua district administrator Alfredo Matata said that ironstone occurs in Naquess locality, and a company had already begun exploiting this mineral.
He also reported that, in addition to this company, local artisanal miners had been extracting gold, although in small quantities.
Matata added that his executive was urging people dedicated to the exploitation of these resources to organise themselves into associations in order to carry out the activity in a free and transparent manner, through ‘mining passes’ [‘senhas mineiras]’.
