The German government on Thursday announced that it will provide over 14 million euros to support energy and education programmes in Mozambique.
Of the amount, over 13 million euros are earmarked for the joint programme “Green Energy for Communities in Mozambique” and the remaining 1 million euros will be for the basic education and vocational education programme, said the German embassy in Maputo, in a joint statement with the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
According to the document, the funds for the energy sector aim to contribute to “access to sustainable electricity for at least 7,000 families and small businesses in rural areas,” which are not connected to the national power grid.
“The programme aims to contribute to the realisation of the Government of Mozambique’s commitment to achieve universal access to electricity by the year 2030”.
The amount earmarked for education falls within the scope of support for measures to prevent and manage the impacts of Covid-19, by obtaining hygiene and sanitation materials.
It is also expected to contribute to the “promotion of the return and retention of children in schools after the reopening, including psychosocial support, both for professionals in the sector and for the students themselves.
