The German government announced on Thursday support of €199 million for sectors of social and economic development in Mozambique, as part of closer bilateral cooperation, according to a joint statement.
The statement from the German embassy in Maputo and Mozambique’s ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation said that the funding would be channelled to professional education, decentralisation and public finance, sustainable economic development, and renewable energy.
The new financial package was agreed upon during negotiations between the delegations of the two countries, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, the statement said.
“The parties reaffirmed their mutual desire to strengthen further bilateral relations, based on mutual trust and reciprocal advantages, which characterise this long-standing partnership,” the text reads.
On the occasion, the head of the German delegation, Alois Schneider, head of Division Southern Africa at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , said, “Germany is a committed, reliable, experienced partner that supports Mozambique in implementing its development objectives through effective cooperation.
Schneider added that Germany is one of Mozambique’s biggest bilateral donors, with a long history of cooperation.
He said that Germany’s aid would focus more on the northern region of Mozambique, where the province of Cabo Delgado has since 2017 been affected by an armed insurgency characterised by several entities as terrorism.
For his part, the head of the Mozambican delegation at the negotiations, Aristides Adriano, said that the Mozambican government recognised the importance of the partnership with Germany as part of development cooperation.
