President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, on June 17th inaugurated a new drinking water supply and distribution system that will benefit around 18,000 people in Nhamatanda.
The infrastructure, worth around €2.9 million, was financed within the framework of the bilateral agreement between the Government of Mozambique and the Federal Government of Germany.
To date, the inhabitants of Nhamatanda depended on a small non-potable water distribution network that benefited only around 3,000 inhabitants. The new infrastructure was designed to provide three times more drinking water than the current demand required by municipal needs, already anticipating population growth.
With a drinking water distribution network increased by 18 km, new household connections and 14 new public standpipes, the new water system will benefit more than 18,000 people.
The project was financed within the framework of the PRODIA program, through the German Development Bank (KfW), and contributes, together with the Good Financial Governance (BGF) program, to the implementation of the decentralisation process in Mozambique.
“Water is life!” the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mozambique, Ronald Münch, says. “Thanks to the new system, more than 18,000 people in Nhamatanda have access to drinking water. Through our partnership programs between Mozambique and Germany, we have supported the development of this municipality, which is an integral part of the great Beira-Chimoio-Harare corridor.”
The German government has a portfolio of projects in the Province of Sofala worth around €90 million, distributed across several areas of strategic action, such as good governance and support for the decentralisation process, development of the private and financial sector, education and vocational training, and energy.
