Mozambique generates 4.2 million tons of solid waste per year, Minister of Land and Environment Ivete Maibaze revealed on the occasion of World Environment Day, which is marked this Thursday and whose main celebrations are taking place in Mojinqual district, Nampula province.
Minister Maibaze appealed for society to take more responsibility, noting that at least 30% of solid waste is produced in urban areas, mostly composed of inorganic matter such as metal, plastic, paper and cardboard, glass, electronic material and batteries.
The theme of World Environment Day 2023 is ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’, a call for global action to end plastic pollution. Each year, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flows into the world’s oceans. The amount is expected to triple by 2040.
