Since last weekend, the city of Nampula has been facing an unprecedented shortage of gasoline, the fuel most commonly used by vehicles in the municipality in the north of the country, Wamphula Fax reports.
The situation, which worsened throughout the day on Monday, resulted in huge queues forming at the few gas stations that still had fuel for sale.
The origin of the problem is currently unknown, as the owners of gas stations have declined to make statements to the press. However, one of the employees at the gas stations, who spoke to our reporter, revealed that the large distributors are not supplying the pumps.
“My boss always fills up the car at the Petromoc and, in the last few days, they haven’t been filling up. I don’t know what’s going on,” our source said.
Motorcycle taxi operators are currently the most affected, since their fuel tanks are small and require daily refuelling, a situation that is affecting their ability to serve their customers.
“This morning (Monday), I only filled up with one litre because I didn’t have money for more. Now that I want to refuel, after having already made a few trips with customers, I can’t. I’ve already passed two gas stations that don’t have fuel and many others where the queues are huge,” explained one young motorcycle taxi driver, adding that he would not reach his daily revenue target.
In fact, some of these motorcycle taxi drivers are taking advantage of the situation to increase prices, claiming that they are buying the product on the black market or bribing employees to get fuel, which increases the cost.
“The lack of gasoline has a negative impact on our business. If the situation continues, we will be forced to adjust our rates in line with the prices charged on the informal market. For example, a litre of gasoline now costs 150 meticais. Currently, from the Sipal station to Faina, I charge 80 meticais, but tomorrow the price will not be the same,” warned motorcycle taxi driver Belito Castro.
