Efforts are currently underway to mobilize funds from cooperation partners to finance the construction of sanitary landfills in the municipalities of Pemba, Quelimane, Tete, and Xai-Xai.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Government through the Ministry of Land and Environment (MTA), aims to reduce the improper disposal of waste in these four urban centers.
This information was disclosed this week in the nation’s capital during the Second National Seminar on the Dissemination of the Maputo Model for Urban Solid Waste Management, presented by MTA representative Samson Cuamba.
Cuamba also noted that evaluations are ongoing for land use and exploitation documents, environmental impact studies, technical and financial feasibility assessments, and other requirements necessary for the implementation of the landfills. In municipalities that do not yet meet the conditions for landfill construction, such as Nacala and Nampula, the Mitigation Facility project is being implemented to establish waste treatment infrastructure.
While the MTA is mobilizing resources, it is simultaneously conducting environmental studies in the municipalities of Lichinga, Chimoio, and Vilankulo.
