Mozambique’s Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) on Monday night announced price increases for fuels ranging from 6.3 to 42.5 per cent, taking effect as from Tuesday.
The sharpest rise was for kerosene. A litre of kerosene, which used to cost 50.16 meticais (about 78 US cents, at the current exchange rate) now costs 71.48 meticais, a rise of 42.5 per cent.
The price of a litre of diesel rises by 11.3 per cent from 70.97 to 78.97 meticais, while petrol now costs 83.3 rather than 77.39 meticais a litre, which is an increase of 7.6 per cent. The price of a kilo of LPG cooking gas goes up from 80.49 to 85.55 meticais, a rise of 6.3 per cent.
The last rise in fuel prices was on 18 March, and ARENE warned there is no guarantee of price stability – everything depends on how the fuel price fluctuates on the world market.
ARENE chairperson, Paulo da Graca, told reporters that consumers are still not being asked to pay the full cost of fuel. If world market prices were applied. Mozambican consumers would pay 87.56 meticais for a litre of petrol and about 84 meticais for a litre of diesel. The price rises were not this large because the government reduced fuel taxes by about four meticais a litre.
