The president of the Foundation for Community Development of Mozambique, Graça Machel, said yesterday that the country is looking bad because of revelations of hidden debt, and urged speedy clarification of the scandal.
“The country is being frowned upon, but we still do not know how much debt we have. The first step is to establish how much debt there is and under what conditions it was taken on, so as then to be able to decide how we will deal with it” Machel said on the sidelines of an international health forum meeting in Maputo.Admitting that the situation is worrying, Machel, who was minister of Education in the first Mozambican government after independence, called for the country to back domestic production in order to reduce dependence on external financing, and warned of the risk of a deep economic crisis.
Machel recalled that just a month ago Mozambique was seen as an exemplary country and said she regretted that the news had now demonstrated otherwise.
“Now the world news is that Mozambique is the worst example that could be found of contracting and managing debt,” she said.
According to reports in the international press, the undisclosed loans contracted by the country’s secret services proxy Proindicus subsidiary was supposed to purchase maritime defence equipment, including drones (unmanned air vehicles) to protect the coastline.
