Frelimo has scheduled the party’s 12th Congress for the 23rd to the 28th of September 2022 at its Central School in Matola, Maputo province.
The date was announced on Sunday night by Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi at the close of the IV Ordinary session of the party’s Central Committee.
President Nyusi explained the Central Committee’s reasons for deciding on those specific dates.
“Why these dates? These dates coincide with the holding of the First Congress of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique,” he said.
“The Congress, Frelimo’s most important organ, outlines the ideological political options and decides on the fundamental issues of the life of the party. As is our characteristic, our Congress represents a moment of exaltation of our journey, a celebration of our achievements and a consolidation of union and internal cohesion, with a view to the future of Mozambique. In this context, we urge the organs, members, militants, supporters and social organizations, in particular, and the Mozambican people, who, in general, cherish us in the country and in the diaspora, to actively participate in the preparations for the 12th Congress, making it a moment of reflection and celebration, strengthening and consolidating the spirit of national unity, peace and development,” he said.
The Frelimo president also reported that the party had taken important decisions, such as strengthening the capacity of the Defence and Security Forces to fight terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
Filipe Nyusi also pledged to ensure acceleration of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of Renamo’s remaining armed men.
