Mozambique: Frelimo wins 44 of 53 municipalities

The Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) has won Mozambique’s municipal elections in 44 of the country’s 53 municipalities, according to official figures released yesterday.

Only the results from Malema in the north of the country remain unknown, though the deadline for publication of results by local electoral bodies was yesterday.

Frelimo remains at the helm in the capital, Maputo, while the main opposition party, the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), took seven municipalities, including two provincial capitals: Quelimane, in Zambéiza province, and Nampula, in Nampula.

The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) remains in power in Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala.

The results were confirmed yesterday by Lusa at the joint Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) and National Elections Commission (CNE) website and in the election observation bulletin of the Public Integrity Centre (CIP), a nongovernmental organisation.

Compared to the 2013 local elections, in which Renamo did not participate, the number of municipalities in which Frelimo won fell from 49 to 44.

The CIP bulletin notes that Renamo is contesting the results “in the four municipalities where Frelimo won by less than 1%” – namely Monapo, Alto Molócué, Moatize and Matola, the second largest municipality in the country – and also in Marromeu, where ballot boxes were allegedly deviated.

Ossufo Momade, coordinator of Renamo’s political commission, threatened on Saturday to abandon peace talks with President Nyusi over the alleged manipulation of results.

A Frelimo spokesman on the same day called for the main opposition party to stop its “blackmail” and maintain the integrity of the peace process.
