The Association of Combatants in the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLIN), an influential entity in the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) party, on Tuesday (26-04) re-elected Fernando Faustino for a third term as secretary general of the veterans’ organisation.
Faustino was the only candidate, and was elected with 98% of the votes of the 217 effective members of the ACCLIN national committee.
The politician, who has held the post for ten years, was voted another five-year term.
The President of the Republic and of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, said after the vote that the re-election of the secretary-general “is the result of the recognition of his leadership qualities, revealed since the period of the armed struggle, in defence of the cause and interests of the country”.
Nyusi stressed “the firm, open, upright and determined way in which Comrade Fernando Faustino has led the association.”
ACCLIN is one of the organisations within Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique for over 46 years, which frequently issues positions on various issues in the country’s life.
The national conference of Frelimo veterans precedes the next ruling party congress, scheduled for 23-28 September of this year.
