The secretary general of Frelimo, Roque Silva, met his counterpart from the African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, in South Africa this Wednesday (06-03).
The two leaders were supposed to meet in Johannesburg last Friday, but this did not happen because Fikile Mbalula was at the funeral ceremonies of the nine ANC members who died in a road accident on 25 February, after participating at the launch of the party’s election manifesto in Durban.
Roque Silva and Fikile Mbalula reviewed cooperation between Frelimo and the ANC and the social, political and economic situation of the two countries. The participation of both Frelimo and ANC in this year’s elections in Mozambique and in South Africa was also on the agenda.
This Monday, Roque Silva Frelimo had once again predicted that the ANC and Frelimo would win this year’s ballots.
Today, he renewed the stance: “We must make sacrifices to achieve our people’s economic liberation, which is only possible with us winning the elections: Roque Silva said.
“We have a nationalist agenda, our parties have a nationalist agenda, and it’s only possible to execute it by winning elections. Therefore, it is forbidden to lose elections. It is forbidden for Frelimo in Mozambique to lose elections, it is forbidden for the ANC in South Africa to lose elections, as is forbidden for all other liberation movements in Africa to lose elections. Hence, the need to remain united, as our historic leaders were united in the struggle for the liberation of nations.”
Roque Silva also today met the General Secretary of the Communist Party, Solly Mapaila.
This morning, Roque Silva was also scheduled to meet with Mathews Phosa, an anti-Apartheid activist who was exiled in Mozambique and is a former governor of Mpumalanga and former secretary of administration of the ANC. Mathews Phosa is now a lawyer and businessman.
This marked the last leg of Roque Silva’s five-day visit to South Africa, which baegan on Friday (01-03).
Silva’s agenda also included meetings with local Frelimo bodies, with the Mozambican community in South Africa, and visits to places of historical and cultural interest.
The Frelimo secretary general also held a meeting with Mozambican miners in Klerksdorp, in South Africa’s North West province.
Roque Silva was accompanied by the secretaries of the Central Committee for Administration and Finance, Sónia Macuvel; Communications and Image, Ludmila Maguni; the first provincial secretaries of Gaza, Daniel Matavel; of Maputo province, Avelino Muchine; the general secretaries of the Frelimo Women’s Wing (OMM) and Youth Wing (OJM), Mariazinha Niquisse; and Silva Livone; as well as other party cadres.
