The spokesman for Frelimo, Caifadine Manasse, on Friday said that its leader and president, Filipe Nyusi, has not received any bribes for the money from hidden debts and is exempt from blame.
He was referring to allegations by the main defendant of the trial in the US, Jean Boustani, that the company Privinvest paid $5 million (€4.5 million) for the 2014 presidential campaign of Filipe Nyusi (€1 million for his campaign and four million for Frelimo), at the request of former President Armando Guebuza.
Caifadine Manasse pointed out that before the start of the trial in New York, Filipe Nyusi was already working to clarify the case and hold the perpetrators accountable.
“President Filipe Nyusi ordered the creation of a commission of inquiry, through the parliamentary bench of Frelimo, and he guided the government to clarify this situation,” he said.
The inquiry concluded that the guarantees provided by the former Mozambican government for the contraction of loans that gave rise to hidden debts are illegal, having sent the results to the Attorney General’s Office for the criminal, civil and administrative accountability of the authors of those charges, in a process that is underway.
Caifadine Manasse stressed that the course of the judicial process on hidden debts should be monitored calmly until its outcome.
“We must wait calmly. Jean Boustani is accused in New York and trying to defend himself,” said the Frelimo spokesman.
