The Political Commission of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) on Monday appointed Daniel Chapo, who will be the ruling party’s candidate for President of the Republic in October, as interim secretary-general.
“The Political Commission appointed comrade Daniel Francisco Chapo to hold the position of interim secretary-general, until the election of the new Frelimo secretary-general at a session of the Central Committee,” reads the communiqué of the second extraordinary session of that body, which took place today in Maputo, guided by the president of the party and head of state, Filipe Nyusi.
Frelimo secretary-general Roque Silva resigned from his position during the internal voting process to choose the party’s candidate for the position of President of the Republic in the October 9 elections, during the extraordinary session of the party’s Central Committee, which lasted for three days and ended on May 5th.
The resignation was announced by Filipe Nyusi in the closing speech of the session, which elected Daniel Chapo as the party’s candidate for his succession, acknowledging Silva’s stance, which allowed the vote to be unblocked.
In his speech, Nyusi praised Roque Silva’s “stance of integrity, with the party’s principles, by voluntarily renouncing his candidacy for the second round [at the Central Committee meeting] and the position of general secretary of Frelimo and consequently his status as a member of the commission policy”.
The choice of Daniel Chapo by the 254-member Central Committee came only on the third day of the meeting, initially called for just one day, and after a first-round vote, which he led, ahead of Roque Silva.
Since Mozambique’s independence, all presidents came from Frelimo, namely Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano (from the south of the country) and Armando Guebuza and Filipe Nyusi (north). Daniel Chapo is the first Frelimo-nominated candidate born in the central region of the country (Inhaminga).
