Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique since independence, convened an extraordinary session of its Central Committee today to close the last dossiers on the congress that will take place in eight days.
A source from the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) told Lusa that the meeting will analyse proposals for revising the party’s statutes and the agenda for the grand meeting, scheduled to take place in Matola city, outskirts of Maputo, between 23 and 28 September.
Frelimo will discuss seven theses of political orientation at the congress and renew its internal bodies on the eve of a new electoral cycle.
The 12th party congress will take place at a time when the country is preparing for local elections in 2023 and general elections in 2024.
The Central Committee is Frelimo’s most important decision-making body, immediately below the congress and, statutorily, will later elect the party’s presidential candidate at a specific meeting.
At today’s meeting of the Central Committee, chaired by the party leader and head of state, Filipe Nyusi, a directive on the proclamation of honourable Frelimo members will still be on the table.
The seven theses to be presented to the congress are: National Unity, Peace, Reconciliation and Democracy, Nature and Role of Frelimo in the Organization of State and Society, Good Governance, Ethics, Transparency and Combating Corruption, Access to Justice and Education, as well as Science and Innovation as a Development Strategy.
Inclusive and Sustainable Economic and Social Development and Territorial Integrity, Defence, Security, Public Order and Combating Crime, and Mozambique in the Region, Africa and the World are the remaining areas under debate.
The meeting will also focus on the country’s economic and political situation.
