After several postponements, the Frelimo party has decided to meet to evaluate the work of its Political Commission, Verification Committee and the Central Office in preparing for elections, in a session that will also serve to approve the Party’s Plan of Activities and Budget for 2021.
The Central School of the Frelimo Party, located in the city of Matola, will this weekend (22/23-05) host the IV ordinary session of the Central Committee, a body composed of 250 members.
This Monday, Frelimo spokesman Caifadine Manasse told the press that Frelimo had everything ready for the start of a political week which will have the Central Committee meeting as highlight. The main meeting will be preceded by sessions of the central committees of the Organisation of Mozambican Youth (OJM – Frelimo youth wing), the Organisation of the Mozambican Women (OMM,) and the Association of Combatants of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN), to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
Speaking on the sidelines of the preparations, Manasse told the press that Frelimo was going to the Central Committee session bolstered by its victory in the last electoral elections which, as a result of general commitment of the members of the party led by Filipe Nyusi, resulted in its election in all of the countries districts and provinces.
Regarding rumours about an alleged “race for the succession” to Filipe Nyusi, Manasse said no such matter was on the agenda this weekend, and that the party remained strong and cohesive and would support the governance of Filipe Nyusi until the end of his term.
“For this session, we have the agenda points that we have already announced. President Filipe Nyusi is president of Frelimo and of the Republic of Mozambique until the end of this five-year period. Regarding a candidate or candidates for succession, Frelimo will pronounce itself at the appropriate time and, at this moment, what the party has is a president, Filipe Nyusi, who is, at the same time, the President of the Republic and, if there is any change it will be the result of the manifestation of the popular will,” he commented.
Also attending the Frelimo Central Committee meeting will be the members of the organ and the honorary presidents of the party, but no guests, unlike previous sessions, and this in response to restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
