The Central Committee of Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique, will announce until Sunday the “verdict” on the disciplinary proceedings against Samora Machel Junior, son of the first Mozambican President, Samora Machel, said party spokesman Caifadine Manasse.
“What we are doing is debating the report of the Verification Committee [which is the party’s disciplinary body] , understand in depth what was it that happened and in the end we will have a verdict,” Manasse told the press.
Frelimo, he continued, always takes a position on the issues it debates about the life of the party and of the country.
The analysis of Samora Machel Júnior’s behaviour and of the full report of the Verification Committee – added the Frelimo spokesman – will be based on the principles the party stands for, namely: unity, stability and cohesion,
“What we want is that society understands that the Frelimo party functions as a family and that, within the family there may exist someone with a certain behaviour but who is part of the family,” said Manasse.
Frelimo’s spokesman said that assessing the conduct of its members will not divert the party from its main focus, which is the preparation for the October 15 general election.
The Frelimo Verification Committee has decided to institute disciplinary proceedings against Samora Machel Júnior after the politician decided to run for municipal elections on October 10 last year as head of list of a civic association [AJUDEM] against his own party’s candidate, Eneas Comiche.
Samora Machel’s son joined an independent candidacy after Frelimo had prevented him from running for party internal elections for reasons which remain unknown to this day.
In response to the disciplinary proceedings, Samora Machel Júnior accused the President of the Republic and of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, of violating the party’s statutes for allegedly impeding his candidacy to the municipality of Maputo.
Samora Machel Junior also demanded that Frelimo open disciplinary proceedings against Filipe Nyusi.
