The Political Commission of Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique, on Thursday urged the people of the northern and central regions of the country to denounce terrorist attacks and collaborate with the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
In a communiqué issued at the end of its weekly session, Frelimo’s Political Commission called for the vigilance of the populations of Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, against the action of armed groups in the region.
The commission also urged the populations of the provinces of Sofala and Manica, centre, to keep an eye on the armed actions of the Military Junta of the Renamo National Resistance.
“The Political Commission urges the population to remain vigilant and collaborate with the authorities in denouncing the action of terrorists and armed men, in the northern and central areas of the country”.
In the note, the commission congratulates the FDS for their commitment and dedication in the protection of people, goods and public and private institutions and encourages them to continue with their readiness to defend the territory and its citizens.
Since October 2017, the province of Cabo Delgado has been the scene of attacks by armed groups which, according to the United Nations, have forced 250,000 people to flee and placed 712,000 in need of humanitarian aid.
The conflict has already killed at least 1,000 people, and some of the attacks have been claimed by the jihadist Islamic State (IS) group.
The provinces of Sofala and Manica have been the scene since August 2019 of armed attacks by the Renamo Military Junta, a dissidence of the military arm of the main opposition party, which has already caused the death of more than two dozen people and the destruction of property.
The Junta challenges the leadership of Renamo President Ossufo Momade and the peace agreement he signed with the government.
