Mozambique: Freight trains resume in Malawi line – Lusa

Nacala Logistics announced on Thursday it was resuming general cargo rail transport between Blantyre, the economic capital of Malawi, and the port of Nacala in Mozambique.

“The operation was interrupted for about four months due to the effects of heavy rains and Cyclone Ana, ” but resumed this month and is active, a statement said.

The bad weather in the first quarter caused “the collapse of the Mauzi rail bridge, in the section between Nkaya and Limbe, in Malawi,” it said.

With the reopening of the section, Nacala Logistics hopes to return to carrying 45,000 tons per month between the port of Nacala and Malawi in both directions.

The line includes a container cargo monitoring system through which it is possible to follow the progress of transport operations remotely.

Grains, fertilizers, clinker and fuel are among the goods transported.

The transport of goods came about as an additional service for the 1,000-kilometre line built to transport part of the coal production from Tete, in the interior of Mozambique.
