The Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre in Maputo will, on Friday at 8:00 p.m., host the second edition of Lovers Rock, an event that brings to the stage a celebration of romantic reggae.
The show brings together Mozambican musicians from different generations and styles, who will perform classic and original songs from the genre.
Lovers Rock was introduced to Mozambique by Dub Rui, a Mozambican musician and DJ, known as the “Godfather” of dub in the country. After its debut in February last year, the initiative, according to the press release from the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center, has been gaining popularity, bringing together musicians and fans to celebrate the connection between music and local culture and romantic reggae.
The second edition of the event will feature the participation of renowned Mozambican artists, such as Dua Maciel, Mingas, Muzila, Onésia Muholove, Pedro da Silva Pinto, Ras Haitrm, Regina dos Santos, Rita Couto, Xixel Langa and Xavier Machiana, accompanied by EL B Band, who will perform their unique interpretation of this reggae subgenre, offering the audience a mix of sounds and experiences.
Lovers Rock is a subgenre of reggae that emerged in the late 1960s and became established in the 1970s, especially in the United Kingdom, as an expression of the black community, bringing a more romantic approach to reggae.
Although it has its roots in Jamaican rocksteady, Lovers Rock is distinguished by the soft and sentimental way in which it addresses issues of love, relationships and emotions.
Originally influenced by soul and R&B, Lovers Rock became one of the strongest cultural expressions during a time of great racial tension. Its popularity grew during the 1980s, when it began to conquer a larger audience, becoming one of the best-known and most appreciated forms of reggae worldwide.
