In a message marking the 49th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence, France has reiterated that it is “fully committed” to helping the country re-establish security in Cabo Delgado, the scene of terrorist attacks since 2017.
In a message released on Wednesday by the Mozambican Presidency, France highlights, in addition to security, its support for the “development of Cabo Delgado with its European and African partners”.
According to the same source, French President Emmanuel Macron highlights the “quality of relations with Mozambique”, congratulating the country on passing 49 years of independence, on June 25th.
“The recent signings of bilateral agreements on maritime cooperation, cultural cooperation, and even relating to the French high school in Maputo bear, witness to this. Our neighbourhood in the Indian Ocean also contributes to the vitality of our relationship. France and Mozambique work closely together in the United Nations Security Council,” President Macron says in a statement quoted by the Mozambican presidency.
In the message, Emmanuel Macron congratulates the Mozambican head of state on his presidency of the United Nations Security Council in March, a body of which Mozambique is a non-permanent member.
“I welcome the quality of the joint work carried out in New York, which offered us the opportunity to strengthen our cooperation on major international issues, in particular the defence of international law, the promotion of multilateralism and the fight against terrorism,” the French president says in a message marking 49 years of independence.
On June 25, 1975, Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique and leader of Frelimo, which led the liberation struggle, proclaimed national independence after a struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime that began in September, 1964.
