Four Mozambican judokas are participating in the World Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from the 6th to the 13th of June, all seeking to score enough points to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The country will be represented by Ayton Siquir, in the 73 kg category; Jacira Ferreira, 52 kg; Kevin Loforte, 66 kg; and Narciso Matos, 73 kg. They are coached by Edson Madeira and Adriano Cândido, with Bruno Luzia the technical official.
Mozambique goes to this competition motivated by Kevin Loforte winning bronze at the African Championship in Dakar, Senegal, in May.
Loforte’s performance raised his world ranking 70th to 67th position, with 809 points against the previous 709, and has raised hopes of him scoring enough to qualify directly for the world’s biggest sporting event.
Mozambique has so far succeeded in qualifying six athletes for the Tokyo Olympic Games, namely Deyse Nhaquile, Maria Machava and Denise Parruque (sailing), Joaquim Lobo (canoeing), and Rady Gramane and Alcinda Panguana (boxing).
