At least four people died and 12 were injured when a passenger transport minibus crashed and overturned in Zavala, Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, at around 5:50 a.m. on Wednesday morning, a police source told Lusa.
The van was carrying 16 passengers when it crashed and overturned, causing four deaths and injuring 12 people, six seriously, said Nércia Bata, spokeswoman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Inhambane.
“The vehicle was heading to Maputo province and was travelling at high speed,” Bata said. The injured were taken to the Zavala District Hospital.
This is the second serious accident involving a passenger minibus in less than two days in Mozambique.
On Tuesday (02-01), four people died and six others were seriously injured in an accident in Nampula, northern Mozambique, allegedly caused by the poor condition of the vehicle in which they were travelling.
Road accident rates in Mozambique are classified as dramatic by several organisations.
Mozambican authorities point to excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol as the main causes of accidents.
On average, at least a thousand people die annually on the country’s roads, according to data provided by the Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Accidents (AMVIRO).
