Four people died and another 27 contracted injuries, some serious, as a result of a road accident in the district of Massinga, Inhambane province.
The accident involved an open box vehicle ferrying passengers home from the beach at around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
One of the victims, Elsa, who is in serious condition at Massinga District Hospital, said the driver had been driving at high speed all the way from the beach to the place where the accident occurred.
The apprehensive passengers’ requests for him to slow down were ignored, and the driver finally lost control of the vehicle in the Malova region, where it overturned with more than 30 people on board.
The accident resulted in the death of four people and the injury of 27 others, six of whom are in serious condition.
Police attribute the accident to speeding and overcrowding. The driver, who is on the run, was not qualified to drive, one of the survivors told ‘O País’.
The vehicle belongs to the father of the driver, a citizen newly returned from South Africa.
