Four individuals have been detained in Sofala province on accusations of having raped a woman and then murdered her because her family did not pay the ransom demanded. The victim, who lived in Tete, was lured in by one of the suspects via Facebook.
The tragic story has sent shockwaves throughout the country. The case began on the 15th of this month, when an individual displaying a luxurious but false life-style on the Facebook social network successfully seduced a woman who in life answered to the name of Matilde Anselmo.
During the virtual meeting, they agreed that the following day, the woman would travel from Tete, where she lived and worked in the environmental sector, to the district of Dondo, in Sofala, where the man lived, for their first in-person meeting.
In Dondo, the fake boyfriend, accompanied by three accomplices, met the victim, and they all got into a vehicle. They then went to a forest, where the men tied up the victim and raped her. They then took photos of her still tied up and naked.
The individuals then demanded 100,000 meticais from the victim’s family, but the amount was negotiated down to 80,000.
The woman made a phone call asking for help, and the criminals sent the photos of the victim they had taken to reinforce the ransom demand. As the money was not provided, the suspects murdered Matlde.
During the investigations, Sernic discovered that the gang had, in collusion with another woman, been following this ‘modus operandi’ since the end of last year, and that six women had already fallen victim to them.
