Four individuals are under police custody after they were found in possession of six kilos of amphetamine and unspecified other drugs in the southern Mozambican city of Matola, according to the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
SERNIC spokesperson, Henrique Mendes, told reporters that, in addition to the drugs the authorities also seized some scales the traffickers had been using to weigh the substances. However, the four individuals have denied any involvement in drug trafficking.
“The four men are under arrest because SERNIC found that they were in possession of a banned substance. A preliminary laboratory exam has concluded that the drug is amphetamine. Other substances are still undergoing testing for accurate identification,” Mendes said.
This is the latest in a series of drug seizures. The largest was in January, when police arrested two individuals ferrying 15 kilos of heroin on a truck from the northern province of Nampula to Maputo. The vehicle had a false bottom installed to hide the drugs and the two men detained admitted they had transported drugs on several previous occasions.
But the truck driver claimed to be unaware of the content of the goods he ferried, much less the final destination. “When I reach Maputo I park the truck at the usual site and someone else takes the wheel to drive he truck to another place where the goods are then unloaded,” he claimed.
