The Mozambican Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on Thursday arrested four people or the illegal import of 32 shotguns into Mozambique.
The four individuals, two South Africans and two Mozambicans were arrested at the Ressano Garcia border post.
According to SERNIC Maputo spokesperson, Henrique Mendes, the four were detained because they failed to present any legal document for the import of the firearms.
Mendes said they could present no proof that they were authorised to bring the guns into Mozambique. One of the South Africans, however, said he had been instructed to contact a Mozambican citizen, a customs broker, to facilitate the clearance of the goods.
Mendes said this customs broker was also detained so that his involvement could be investigated.
The second Mozambican arrested is a representative of a private security company that had requested the import of the firearms.
According to Mendes, the importer has confirmed that he is the owner of the guns. “He presented some documents, but they are not from the competent body that authorizes the import of that type of merchandise”.
The suspects have been interrogated, and the authorities decided to keep them in preventive detention while investigations continue.
