Former President of Mozambique Armando Guebuza has said he hopes that Daniel Chapo, who will be sworn in as president today, “absorbs the reality” that the country is experiencing in the face of post-election tension, and performs “a miracle” for Mozambicans.
“What do we expect from President Chapo’s government? Obviously that he fulfils his obligations and the promise he made during the campaign and also absorbs the reality that we are currently experiencing of tension and performs the miracle that we all hope he will perform,” Guebuza said in a statement to the media this morning at Independence Square in the heart of Maputo, where the inauguration ceremony of Daniel Chapo as the fifth President of Mozambique will take place.
In response to journalists’ questions, Guebuza also said, cited by O País, that he hoped Chapo could perform the miracle that everyone expects of him.
Many other guests spoke to the press at Independence Square, one of whom, former Attorney General of the Republic Augusto Paulino, said that working within the law was essential for the construction of a democratic state.
In turn, academic Jamisse Taimo urged an openness to dialogue on the part of all political actors, starting from the moment Daniel Chapo takes office.
Taimo recalled that openness to dialogue is essential because Mozambique, like the world in general, is in deep economic crisis. Without stability, development investment may have to be diverted to resolving conflicts, which would not prioritize the peace desired to make the qualitative leap.
Daniel Francisco Chapo was sworn in today in Maputo as the fifth President of the Republic of Mozambique, the first to be born after the country’s independence, in a ceremony attended by around 2,500 guests and two heads of state.
