Mozambique expects to produce 1,641 kilograms of gold this year, up 1% compared to 2024, with almost half of that for export, according to data compiled today by Lusa from the budget proposal.
According to the proposed Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) for 2025, now being analysed by the specialised committees of the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo, this forecast takes account of the effects of the post-election demonstrations that have affected Mozambique since October.
“Within the scope of the gold production plan, growth of 1% is expected for 2025 compared to 2024, as a result of the decline in gold mining companies (in the province of Manica), after the burning and vandalism of the facilities of the Bandire Miners Association during the protests,” the document states.
In 2021, Mozambican production amounted to 764 kilograms of gold, the following year to 1,264, in 2023 to a record 1,666 kilograms and in 2024 it fell to 1,626 kilograms.
According to the government document, 44% of the gold produced in Mozambique last year was exported, a percentage that is expected to increase slightly to 45% in 2025, in addition to the target of 85% by 2029.
A kilogram of gold is currently worth around €92,000 on the international market, meaning that the total Mozambican production expected for 2025 represents an estimate of almost €150 million.
