Nearly 6,000 people from the Changanine administrative post are isolated from the rest of Chibuto district in Gaza province, southern Mozambique, after the main road was cut following the rains in the region.
“We hope that later this week the contractor will start the necessary work to re-establish the link. It is a very vital road. We have around 6,000 people on the other side,” said the Chibuto district administrator, Sergio Moiane, quoted today by Radio Mozambique.
He said alternative roads have been identified to assist the isolated population, but the precarious condition of the roads means only off-road vehicles can use them.
“We are assisting the people, through alternative roads, but we need the road to be reopened in order to facilitate circulation”, he stressed.
In December 2020, in the same province, a total of 1,200 people from an administrative post were also cut off due to the increase in the flow of local rivers following the rain that fell in neighbouring countries, interrupting access roads.
Between October and April, Mozambique is cyclically hit by cyclonic winds from the Indian Ocean and by floods from southern African watersheds, in addition to droughts that almost always affect some parts of the south of the country.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in Mozambique: 714 people died, including 648 victims of two cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) that hit central and northern Mozambique.
