Mozambique Airlines (LAM) saw 44% fewer customers in January compared to the same month in 2020, the company said on Friday, justifying the drop with the impact of Covid-19.
State-owned LAM carried 29,923 passengers in January 2021 compared to 53,249 passengers in the same period of 2020.
The figures released on Friday come after the company announced a drastic drop in revenues that even delayed the payment of January’s salaries.
Despite the drop, operations are continuing and adjusting to the market, the company said in a statement.
To meet demand, LAM has increased the frequency of flights to Quelimane, the capital of central Zambézia province, and there will be more flights on Wednesdays between Quelimane and Beira and on Saturdays in the opposite direction.
Similarly, there will be flights between Quelimane and Tete on Friday, with a return on Sunday.
The company today released several figures for its January flights.
The most frequented routes were Maputo-Nampula-Maputo with 6,438 passengers, Maputo-Beira-Maputo with 4,793, Maputo-Tete-Maputo with 4,226, and Maputo-Pemba-Maputo with 3,706 passengers carried.
LAM said it had ensured an operational punctuality index of 91% for 608 departures, an increase of three percentage points compared to the same period in 2020, when the punctuality recorded was 88% for 1,088 departures.
