Police shot dead five inmates who were trying to escape from a prison in central Mozambique during a riot on Monday night, the corporation announced today.
“The incursion was serious and, as a way to avoid the worst, some [inmates] who were already carrying out the attempt [to escape] were shot,” José dos Santos, director of the Milange penitentiary, told Televisão de Moçambique (TVM).
A prison guard started by firing shots in the air, but later two of the prisoners were “mortally hit on the scene; three were seriously injured and two were slightly injured”, he added.
The three seriously injured died while being transported to hospital.
The penitentiary was at the time being guarded by two guards out of a total of 11 who work in shifts at the prison, which is now holding 282 inmates in institution with a capacity for 150.
Police said that security was tightened after the incident.
