Attacks by armed groups in northern Mozambique have left at least five districts of Cabo Delgado without electricity, a source from Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM) told Lusa on Tuesday.
“The grids in Macomia, Meluco, Quissanga, Ibo and Muidumbe districts are without electricity,” an official source from EDM told Lusa in Maputo.
The company said it still does not know the costs since the damage on the ground has not been surveyed.
EDM said it would only be possible to re-establish the power once security conditions allow it.
Since March, terrorist groups have occupied district headquarters like Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe, Quissanga and Macomia for several days, the latter between Thursday and last Saturday.
Following confrontations, there have been systematic failures in communications and energy supply.
Cabo Delgado, the province where the largest private investment in Africa for natural gas exploration has ben under attack since October 2017, by insurgents classified since the beginning of the year by Mozambican and international authorities as a terrorist threat.

In two and a half years of conflict, it is estimated that at least 600 people have died and about 200,000 have been affected, being forced to take refuge in safer places, losing their homes, gardens, and other property.
