Mozambican authorities in the centre of the country between Wednesday and Saturday detained five individual on suspicion of trafficking wild pangolin, a source from the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) announced this Monday.
The first two detainees, a local telecommunications brand manager and his driver, were caught in possession of a live animal, hidden under the spare tyre of the vehicle they were driving.
“Their story is that, while travelling on National Road No. 1 between Nhamapandza and Gorongosa, they discovered the animal crossing the road, and stopped and picked it up in order to take it to the nearest police station,” SERNIC investigative police officer Mário Tamele told Lusa.
The arrest was made during an operation carried out by Gorongosa National Park (PNG) and SERNIC teams.
Tamele said that three other people were detained on Saturday in the course of subsequent investigations.
Gorongosa National Park personnel point out that the pangolin is protected by law in Mozambique, and its trafficking subject to prison sentences of 12 to 16 years.
